34. THEY

NON-BINARY IS a spectrum of gender identities that are not exclusively masculine or exclusively feminine—identities that are outside the gender binary. Genderqueer is an earlier term with the same meaning, originating from queer zines of the 1980s.
Non-binary people may identify as having two or more genders (being bigender or trigender); having no gender (agender, nongendered, genderless, genderfree or neutrois); moving between genders or having a fluctuating gender identity (genderfluid); being third gender or other-gendered (a category that includes those who do not place a name to their gender).
Some non-binary/genderqueer people prefer to use gender-neutral pronouns. Usage of singular 'they', 'their' and 'them' is the most common; and ze, sie, hir, co, and ey are used as well. Some others prefer the conventional gender-specific pronouns 'her' or 'him', prefer to be referred to alternately as 'he' and 'she', or prefer to use only their name and not use pronouns at all. Many prefer additional neutral language, such as the title 'Mx.' instead of Mr. or Ms. In 2019, they as a non-binary pronoun was added to Merriam-Webster's dictionary [1]

This version of his mother is a non-binary doll. I wanted to showcase the doll’s beauty. This Icy doll reflects this. I carefully chose the eye color design in hopes of capturing the doll’s essence. This was what was most important.

Guys, gals and non-binary pals, let’s start from a place of all genders. Gender is a spectrum where male and female are just two possibilities. As a quick reminder, gender and sex are not the same thing. A person’s sex is their anatomy. A person’s gender is how they perceive themselves. A non-binary person might describe their gender as anything that’s not exclusively male or exclusively female. For some, this means their gender falls in between male and female, or perhaps their gender exists outside of male and female all together.

Some non-binary people identify as transgender because their gender identity does not match the gender they were assigned at birth. Similarly, a non-binary person might experience gender dysphoria—significant distress that their physical body does not match their gender—and to alleviate these symptoms, they might choose to take hormones or undergo surgery. Though not all non-binary people identify as trans, non-binary is under the transgender umbrella. In fact, in the transgender pride flag (the stripes of blue, pink and white), the white stripe was always meant to represent non-binary identities.
Part of a non-binary person’s transition might be to choose a new name or to ask people to refer to them with gender-neutral pronouns. The pronouns “they/them/theirs” is the most common (ex. They went to the store and bought themself a cup of coffee). Other pronouns a person might use include ze, sie, hir, co, or ey. Some people may choose to only use their name and forgo pronouns entirely.

There’s an infinite number of ways to be non-binary and it’s important to remember that non-binary does not always mean androgyny. Non-binary does not always mean thin, white and masculine in style or dress. A person can have any style or wear any type of clothing and if they say they are non-binary, then they are non-binary.

The beauty and importance of this doll is the representation of a non-binary identity. Too often, people assume the only genders are male and female, even when they consider their own gender identity. As an agender person, I assumed I was a woman throughout my life only because I knew I was not a man. Though I was friends with other non-binary people, I never thought that person could be me. But maybe if more people were crafting and creating and visualizing non-binary identities in their work, I could have come to a realization sooner. It’s not about looking at the doll and seeing yourself, but about looking at the doll and seeing possibilities. The creation and craft of this doll is a reminder that there are options. There are artists and creators making non-binary people a little more visible.
