DR. APPLES’ LEGEND STATES his mother was taken from him and replaced with a doll on a pink pillow. Every year, he is presented a doll similar to the likings of his mother. This is the first doll he received. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the disappearance of his mother.
8. ILLUSIONS
MASKS ARE OBJECTS THAT cover the face for variety of reasons. They are used for protection, disguise, entertainment or ritual practices and are made from various materials, depending of use. Earliest use of masks was for rituals and ceremonies, and the oldest found mask is from 7000 BC. Art of making masks could be older but because of the materials used for making them (leather and wood), they did not survive to this day.
Oldest masks were of ritual purpose and could be found in many places of the world. They are generally similar in their overall appearance, but very different in style and way they are made and used. [6]
THIS VERSION OF HIS MOTHER wants to be another doll (Blythe) badly. She can’t see the simple beauty she bestows. She feels her true image is ghastly and creepy. If she could only see what we see. Perhaps we should ask her how she got the mask in the first place.
I love the theatrics of a mask. I wanted to create a cloth doll which kept its innocent beauty yet prose a feeling of suspicion within the doll’s motives. I wanted the mask to show a part of the doll’s personality that is often hid.
This cloth doll is simple yet has its own distinct beauty. She is a doll for collectors. She is not suitable for play.
